EuroRack Power Supplies

It took me quite some time to find out how to power up my EuroRack builds, which typically need +12V, -12V and +5V rails, besides using a lab PSU and make them ‘standalone’.

Then I discovered these great little devices that are able to provide the +12 and -12V needed to power up any EuroRack build, using only a DC wallwart in a 5V to 24V range.

Introducing the DD1718PA and the DD1912PA by Eletechsup:

Both units are designed for the same purpose: produce a stable positive and nefative voltage from a unique positive DC voltage. The main differences are, besides the form factor, the versatility in the input voltage and the current output.

They are very cheap, you can easily find them under respectively 3 and 5€.

Both come in different versions depending on the output you need, from +-5V to +-24V. Obviously you will go for the +-12V if you want to power up EuroRack modules. (although the DD1718PA in the picture is a +-15V)

You will then need just one +5V regulator like a LM7805 to get your +5V rail if needed.

The larger one, the DD1912PA is a boost-buck design, which means it can be powered by a a lower, equal or higher voltage than its designed output. The DD1718PA on the other hand, needs to have a DC input lower by at least one volt than its designed output.

According to the datasheet, the former is capable of delivering 100 to 1000mA of current, when the latter can only deliver 100 to 200mA, depending on the input voltage.

My preferences goes to the DD1912PA, powered with a 12V wallwart, a combination that allows the maximum current draw.

I guess the DP1718PA has its use too due mostly to its small size, but to get some decent current out of it, you will need to lower a 12V input by 1/1.5V, or even to 9V using a LM7809 or a 9V wallwart.

My next post will be about how I upgraded my DJ Rotary Mixer using a DD1912PA @ +-12V.
